Our Process: How Poly-B Plumbing Works in North Bay

The five steps, from first call to follow-up

Every job Poly-B Plumbing takes on in North Bay runs through the same five steps. The order matters: nothing is quoted before it is diagnosed, and nothing is invoiced that was not quoted.

1. Listen first

   The call starts with the problem, the project or the renovation plan, not a sales pitch. For a repair, Poly-B asks for photos so a free online quote can be prepared without a truck roll. Where the fault cannot be judged from photos, a short on-site visit is booked, and a diagnostic fee applies to that visit.

2. Diagnose the right way

   Poly-B does not guess at the cause. Depending on the symptom, the plumber uses a visual inspection, a camera scope for drains and sewer lines, a pressure test for supply lines, or a meter test for hidden leaks. The aim is the root problem, not the spot where the water showed up.

3. Get a clear flat-rate quote

   Every job is quoted by the task, never by the hour, and the quote is written before the work starts. There is no upselling and no padded invoice. Where repair and replacement both make sense, both are priced side by side so the homeowner chooses.

4. Do the work cleanly and to code

   Work is done by a licensed plumber to the Ontario Building Code. Poly-B does not use push-to-connect or SharkBite-style fittings; copper is soldered or pressed and PEX is crimped or expanded. Expect drop cloths, shoe covers and a tidy work area, parts from brands such as Moen, Delta, American Standard and Rheem, and a full cleanup before the truck leaves.

5. Follow up afterward

   After the visit, Poly-B sends the documentation, any care instructions and the next steps if something should be watched. Members of the $49-per-month plan also get seasonal maintenance reminders, priority scheduling and member pricing.

What happens on a repair call

Most North Bay calls to Poly-B are repairs: a leak, a slow or blocked drain, a water heater with no hot water, or a sump pump that has stopped. On the phone, Poly-B asks three things: what you see or hear, whether the water is shut off, and whether anyone else has worked on it. Photos sent by text or through the online quote form often settle the diagnosis on the spot. If the fault is hidden, the on-site diagnostic visit includes whatever test the symptom calls for. A camera scope shows the inside of a drain or sewer lateral on a screen you can watch. A pressure test on the supply side shows whether a line holds. A meter test with every fixture closed shows whether a hidden leak exists at all. Only then is the repair quoted.

How Poly-B quotes a job

Poly-B Plumbing quotes by the task, not the hour. The quote is written, it lists what is included, and it is the price you pay unless you change the scope. Hourly plumbing in Ontario commonly runs $150 to $300 an hour with no ceiling until the job is done, which is the model Poly-B set out to avoid. A flat rate moves the risk of a slow job onto the plumber, where it belongs. Two practical consequences follow. First, Poly-B diagnoses before quoting, because a flat rate on an unknown problem is a guess. Second, the quote sometimes carries two prices, repair and replacement, so a 14-year-old water heater with a failed element is not simply patched without the owner seeing what a new tank would cost.

The extended process for installations and new construction

Bigger jobs follow the same five steps with more stages inside step four. A new-construction rough-in, an addition, a basement finish or a mechanical-room rebuild runs like this:

1. Plan review

   Poly-B reads the drawings, confirms fixture counts and drain routing, and flags anything the Ontario Building Code will not pass before a pipe is cut.

2. Permit and inspections

   Plumbing permits and inspections in North Bay go through the City of North Bay building department. Poly-B schedules the rough-in and final inspections around the framing and drywall trades.

3. Rough-in

   Drain, waste, vent and water lines are installed and strapped, sized to the code tables for the fixture load, with cleanouts where a future drain cleaner will need them.

4. Test before close-in

   Water lines are pressure-tested and the drainage system is tested before drywall goes on. A leak found now costs minutes; the same leak found after paint costs a wall.

5. Finish and final inspection

   Fixtures, the water heater, the sump or sewage pump and any water treatment are set after the finishes, tested and inspected, and the homeowner gets a walkthrough and the documentation.

• A licensed plumber on every job. The owner holds Red Seal journeyman certification and is licensed for plumbing, wells, septic and backflow prevention.
• Work to the Ontario Building Code, with permits pulled where the code requires them.
• No push-fit or quick-connect fittings hidden in a wall.
• Drop cloths, shoe covers and a full cleanup, in a lived-in home or an occupied business.
• A written flat-rate quote before the work, and an invoice that matches it.
• Documentation after the visit, and a plain answer if a repair is not worth doing.

Licensing, insurance and what Poly-B does not do

Plumber (306A) is a compulsory trade in Ontario regulated by Skilled Trades Ontario. Poly-B Plumbing carries up to $5 million in liability insurance. Poly-B does not do gas or propane work; burner, gas valve and gas line jobs are TSSA-regulated and are referred to a licensed gas technician, while Poly-B handles the water side of the same appliance.
